Response:
Chris, thank you for asking about a challenging situation. First, it’s important to remember that when your mom breaks down emotionally, it’s often because she feels overwhelmed, afraid, or helpless. In those moments, what she needs most is your presence, patience, and understanding.
One of the most effective ways you can support her is through active listening. This means giving her your full attention—making eye contact, nodding, and using open body language to show you’re fully present. Let her talk without interrupting or rushing to fix the situation. Sometimes, just being heard is incredibly healing.
Another helpful technique is reflective listening—repeat or rephrase what she says to show you truly understand. For example, if she says, “I just don’t know what to do anymore,” you might respond with, “It sounds like you’re feeling really lost right now.” This not only helps her feel heard, but can also help her process her emotions more clearly.
Avoid trying to “cheer her up” or dismiss her feelings with phrases like “Don’t cry” or “You’ll be fine.” Instead, validate her experience. Say something like, “This is really hard. I’m here with you, and we’ll get through it together.” Your calm presence can make her feel grounded, safe, and less alone.
If she’s open to it, you can gently shift toward problem-solving after the emotions have been acknowledged. But don’t rush it—emotions come first.
If you're not sure how to handle emotional moments like these, you're not alone. Many caregivers struggle with what to say or do. That’s why I recommend checking out our Eldercare Communication Course. The first few lessons are focused on practical communication strategies—including active listening, reflective responses, and more—that can make a big difference when your loved one is struggling emotionally.
You're doing something incredibly important just by being there for your mom. And the more you practice these techniques, the more confident and connected you'll feel in those difficult moments.
